WE ARE PAVING THE WAY FOR AN ABUSE-FREE CHURCH
Please help us support
This NEW 2025 Washington State Bill requires members of the clergy to provide a report to law enforcement or the Department of Children, Youth, and Families when they have reasonable cause to believe that a child has suffered abuse or neglect.
SB5375 has successfully passed the senate with a party line vote (28 - 20 - 1). It was then sent to the House E.L. and Human Services Committee where it was successfully passed out of committee. It must now be voted on and passed by the House of Representatives by April 2nd in order to be sent to the governor's desk to be signed into law. HB1211 failed to pass out of the House Appropriate's Committee leaving SB5375 as the only vehicle for mandated clergy reporting to become Washington State law.

On May 9, 2024, Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced that his office is seeking a court order to obtain documents pertaining to clergy sexual abuse and its institutional concealment from the Archdiocese of Seattle. Ferguson confirmed what members of the Catholic Accountability Project (CAP) had announced at a press conference in February: his office had sent subpoenas to Archbishop Étienne of Seattle, Bishop Tyson of Yakima, and Bishop Daly of Spokane last summer.
In July, the AG's Office lost their appeal in Superior Court with the judge ruling that Washington's Charitable Trust Act (CTA) exempts religious organizations from scrutiny by the state. The case is currently under appeal with a hearing expected to be scheduled in late spring or summer of 2025.
