OUR MISSION
The Catholic Accountability Project (CAP) is dedicated to advocating for justice for victims of clergy sexual abuse and holding perpetrators and those who enabled them responsible for their actions. We relentlessly pursue the vision of a church free from abuse through proactive intervention by justice officials, an unequivocal end to secrecy, and an unwavering commitment to full accountability for the harm caused.
We recognize that true atonement is only possible when those responsible for abuse are held to account for their actions. Through strategic intervention and collaboration with survivors, we strive to dismantle the structures that enable abuse, foster transparency, and cultivate an environment within the Catholic Church prioritizing safety, well-being, and dignity for all. Our mission is driven by the conviction that an abuse-free church is not only achievable but essential for the healing of survivors and the restoration of trust in our faith community.
ABOUT CAP
CAP is a Washington State-based initiative of Ending Clergy Abuse, a global human rights organization dedicated to ending the Church’s structural mechanisms that enable abuse. Since 2018, ECA has fought to protect children and seek justice for victims through collaborative advocacy across 5 continents and 29 countries.
CAP is comprised of Catholics, survivors, and advocates united in a shared vision of an abuse-free church.
Our objectives
To secure a commitment from the Washington Attorney General to complete a statewide investigation into clergy sexual abuse and its institutional concealment in Catholic dioceses and religious orders. This would include:
Compelling production of all abuse-related documents and evidence from dioceses, religious orders, and the Vatican, as well as testimony from Catholic leaders, past and present, in Washington State
Establishing a confidential phone hotline and online reporting system for survivors, witnesses, and whistleblowers to report abuse and related misconduct
Composing a final report to the citizens of Washington State with the investigation’s findings
2. To pass legislation that requires clergy to join all other occupations mandated in Washington State to report abuse and neglect - without exception for circumstances under which the information is obtained (i.e. under the seal of the confessional)
